BIO

Kadence Lewis is a printmaker from Colorado Springs, Colorado. She graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a printmaking emphasis at Mississippi State University in 2024. Her work is an exploration of the subconscious through traditional printmaking techniques and plant and animal symbolism. She enjoys exploring self-portraiture, both literally and metaphorically. Her work is heavily inspired by early religious art, taxidermy and scientific illustration, and the human form. She is currently working as a gallery assistant at Mississippi State University and plans to pursue her MFA in the fall.

Statement

I have always found difficulty in expressing emotion through words, and find myself instead channeling them into the things I create. These detailed illustrative woodcuts utilize common associations with natural symbols, such as plants and animals, to evoke what I felt when creating each piece in this series of work. I work through each block intuitively, allowing flexibility into the piece with each mark I create in the surface. Through my choice of imagery I reflect on my relationship to nature and find comfort within it, as well as reference symbolic associations to the animals I portray. I find my art to be a source of introspection, and I invite the viewer to contemplate each piece's meaning and to create meaning of their own in response.
